It’s that time of year when all of the little girls and boys start to make their Christmas lists for Santa. But this time, most children ask for a specific toy, they are called cell phones. Kids have lots of toys to play with. So why do they demand to have these devices?

Children all over the world have watched their parents look at their cell phone screens from day one, and they most likely have played on them before.  Phones are considered “toys” to kids, and that is not okay. A toy is something that a child can have an imagination with and make memories with. Sure, these devices can be fun to play with, but they are not doing anything that benefits the child’s mind. Therefore, children should not have cell phones until they are at least 12 years old.

More and more children are showing up with cell phones every school year. According to Center on Media and Child Health Web, 54 percent of 8-12 year olds are predicted to have cell phones in the next three years. Our youth these days, have been so addicted to these devices and they seem to always play games, post pictures on social media, and are exposed to mature things at such a young age. Though phones can allow you to listen to music and keep you busy, these devices can distract you from the real world, and ruin your childhood memories. Most childhood memories come from playing dress up, and building tree houses. Now, they seem like they are just a blur.

Phones though -clunky can be very useful at times. These devices can help parents communicate with their children, and help distract them while they are waiting for an appointment.  Cell phones are great for older kids, but not for younger children.

Children that have access to these phones don’t realize what they are doing, and could download inappropriate games or see an ad that their parents might not want them to see. Having cell phones also opens up a new window to where kids can chat with strangers online. This is not okay! These devices have many inappropriate apps and websites that children at a young age should not have access to.

Our world is filled with phones and technology today. Cell phones are good resources, but not for younger children.
